Munich, Germany (AP) – June 14, 2024
WEB Host Germany could hardly have wished for a better start to Euro 2024, hammering 10-man Scotland 5-1 in Munich on Friday to record the biggest opening victory in tournament history.
Florian Wirtz got Julian Nagelsmann's side off to a flying start, scoring twice in the first half. Jamal Musiala added a third before the break, and Timo Werner and Leroy Sane completed the rout in the second half.
The victory was Germany's biggest in a major tournament since their 7-1 win over Brazil in the 2014 World Cup semi-finals.
Scotland, who had John McGinn sent off in the first half, were outplayed from start to finish. They failed to register a single shot on target.
The defeat leaves Scotland bottom of Group F, while Germany move top with three points.
In the other Group F match, Croatia beat the Czech Republic 2-0.
Germany will face Croatia in their next match on Tuesday, while Scotland will take on the Czech Republic.
